Holy Cow, it’s been a year already, WTF (where’s the fish)!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So I have been derilict in my blogging duties, no excuses other than busy life. So the fishing has been pretty good in fact very good at the old haunts. Of course I am sworn to secretcy on location of our fishing haunts, suffice to say, hold it! hold it! almost devulged it there but all I can say it’s called John’s A Hole…. there is no B hole so we’ll leave it at that….New toys; got myself a new rod, it’s a bamboo troutspey. In fact it’s a James Reid rod and it’s a 4 wt. James is a craftsman and his rods are not only beautiful but they fish great. So look him up at  http://www.jmreidbamboo.com/.  I hooked that up that rod to  a beautiful Saracione Skagit 3 3/4″- 1 5/32″ reel. The other fat bastard Robert Fat Bastard “2” and one of the original founders of the Fat Bastards got some new toys also, a sweet bamboo single handed Orvis old school and a Bob Mieser 2 wt Spey, new school. I’ll take some pictures soon of the toys for the next blog. So back to fishing, I will let some of the pictures speak.

Some notes on the photos, mostly taken by John, Fat Bastard #4 and Robert. The big fat brown in the net was courtesy of Wye (honorary Fat Bastard who is not so Fat) photo by Etsuko. That porker was caught in P.E.I. early summer (can’t tell the location). The rest of the photoed fish were caught in the spring & early summer. Early mornings and early evening fishing during the hot summer days, propelled Robert & John to the  hammocks for the obligatory post lunch afternoon nap which lasted more than a proper nap time should what can you expect for old guys. In fact we all got one and once all three of us will set up we will look like a bunch of bananas hanging from trees.  The naps of course  are due to Marlene’s cakes and Jane’s banana breads.

Bruce  (Fat Bastard #3) was not able to fish much with us, many family events happened, his daugther got married (nice) and other stuff like barn and deck building along with the mandatory swearing at squirrels and keeping  Mrs. Bruce happy (wink, wink, say no more). She’ll probably kill me! He did fish a couple of times mostly in the early spring for landlocks. Missed many and yelled many times. Expecting to fish the autumn run!

July was not good very hot and low water, fishing in late August will pick up it’s been raining much here for the last few days so the rivers will fill up again in time for some good late summer fishing and the anticipation of the landlock salmon is in the air.

That’s it for now, will be back sooner rather than later, maybe more pictures and some editing.

Our Spring New Hampshire outing.

So to put it bluntly out annual (early May) Tall Timbers, New Hampshire fly fishing-a-ton for landlocked salmon on the Connecticut River  was a complete disaster. Heavy rains cold nasty weather, snow & hail but worst of all the fish were not there. Granted we had some catches but over the three days nothing to write home about. Report from someone who was there the week before and they also expressed disappointment.

The cottage and the camaraderie was as usual great and many laughs were had and the company was not bad either. I think that The Fat Bastards are contemplating doing next year’s fly fishing-a-ton at another location.

Somewhere on the Saranac River!

Well to make up for the disaster, fishing wise, on the Connecticut River, the good old fishing haunts of the Saranac River NY still amaze. The day was prefect, the water levels perfect and the fish were there. Browns! None smaller that 14 inches and a few over 20 inches. However to my delight one over 24 inches. All on a 3 wt, granted an 11 foot  Sage but never the less a 3 wt. I know, I know where are the pictures! Well, as usual, this dummy forgot his camera, crikey you would think I would learn by now, but a big senior moment was had!  So now my camera is attached to my sling pack. It was not only a good day, no a great day for me but also Robert & John had some big puppies on.

Of course John could not resist and went back a few days later and they were still there. John is all about the “thug is the drug”, honestly who isn’t but John is an addict who needs serious help and counselling.

Here’ one of the flies that worked my “mukler”. Also a “thunder creek” minnow pattern. Also caught some on a “Cali PT” beadhead size 16.

A little catching up is in order!

Had a few minutes today so I thought I would catch up on the whacky world of the fatbastards.

So the winter is way too long and brutaly cold so keeping busy waiting for global warming. In the mean time some of us are tying some flys and we also went to our annual Granby Fly Fishing show. The same usual face and some new ones, the show was smaller than last year no rod displays so no new rods were shown. The Hooke booth was there and they are introducing their new fish porn movie tour “UNGAVA” at CINEMA BEAUBIEN in Montreal this March, thinking of getting tickets, however it’s on a weeknight so may be hard to go. So back to fly tying and getting ready for our trip to the Connecticut River this spring, also looking at the possibility of going back to Terrace, BC and the Skeena for some serious steelhead fishing. Just have to go around collecting & cashing in bottles to raise the money.

Here are some of the flys for the Connecticut.

My daughter Valli is in Botswana after her 3 weeks in India. She’s working on her PhD studying wild dogs. It’s summer there and extremely hot, lucky her.

Forgot to mention that Anglers Roost or better know as the CLUB HOUSE closed it’s door this past August. Wye & Etsuko retired from the fly fishing retail business. Nice people, good fishers!

News Cast on Casting, pun intended!

November 2014

So our normal yearly trip to Pulaski is not happening, mostly due to the fact that some of the Fat Bastards are old Fat Grandpa Bastards. It seems that some are becoming grandpas and some are already grandpas so there seems to be some a “reasoning” to not fish and instead watch little rug rats being well little rug rats.

We have, however been able to do some fishing for landlocks on the Saranac River. The fishing has been good this fall better than the past few years. These fish were caught on Spey Rods with #18 BWO Emergers, yes that’s right #18 BWO!

IMG_7685 IMG_7687_2

More were landed and more were lost, however catching them on #18 BWO is to say the least enjoyable.

On another note, and for your entertainment only I am providing a short but instructive instructional video on casting a Spey Rod, or should I say a news cast on what not to do when casting. Please excuse the shaky video it’s hard to shoot video and chuckle at the same time. Comments will always be appreciated  not on  the videography mind you but on the casting of course, cause it’s not me, ha!

So that’s it for now, more stories and life events to follow. I will try to be more diligent with my posting, however since I am a curmudgeon probably not so much. Ciao!

New babblings

Here we are pretty much near the end of May 2014 and the weather sucks, so much for global warming (do not get me started on this). So we had our trip for the Douglaston Run in Pulaski, NY all set up as we had done over the years for April and it was cancelled due to high water, this of course was due to the extremely cold, hard and long winter. It was two weeks before they reopened the private stretch of water and our trip fell apart. Anyway, we switched gear and booked a few days (3 days) at Tall Timbers Lodge in Pittsburg, NH and fished the Conneticut River for landlocked salmon.  The cabin was nice, good times and loads of laughs were had by all the fat bastards ( all 5 of us) and the fishing was pretty good. Now this is the time I would posts some pictures but this old fat bastard did not bring a camera or should I say I forgot!

Anyway Richard managed to bring his camrea but as far as I can tell only took & sent me one photo. Now I do not know if he did this intentionally or it was the only photo he took. Oh BTW I forgot to mention that Richard (fat bastard #5) recently went through a mid-life crisis and decided to buy a Harley. I bet he has many photos of that hog. But alas only one picture of the many fish we caught and it is held by no other that John (fay bastard #4) the other one who had a mid-life crisis a couple of years ago and also purchased a Harley. Freaking noisy machines these are! So both these guys are taking photos of each other sitting on their hogs, pretty scary.

Most of the fishing was done with tiny flies in the 16 to 20 range mostly BWO and other emergers also worked. Robert was successful using his 5WT Spey and swung (if that’s a word) streamers. I caught some on Pheasants tail bead heads  also in the 14 range. Strangely enough the weather was  perfect for BWO cloudly and cool but the hatch was sproatic at best, so switching flies was a must cause they did not key in on any particular bug. Even some caddis emergers were working. I think our best day was a cool wet afternoon, pouring rain and the fish were hitting on most any bug, good afternoon and to think were were going to stay in the cabin but at the last minute we convinced ourselves to go even though the morning was a wash out. Go figure! Fishing!

So here’s Johnnie!

All the best and good health to all in 2014

Another year past (2013) and not a bad one at that no major health issues in the family. My daughter Valli is working real hard on her PhD and will be once again going to Botswana in August 2014 check out her site at http://whereisvalli.wordpress.com. Proud of her. Jane who puts up with me is always Jane amazing the energy she has. First holidays without Cali our chocolate Lab, miss her.

All the Fat Bastards are doing great and looking forward to some good fishing and floating with the pontoons. Got some nice toys in 2013, my favourite was my bamboo Spey a Bob Clay to be exact. Check out his site http://www.riverwatchrods.com. It’s a 3 piece (two tips) 5 sided spliced ferrule Dean’s Kispiox  11′ 6/7  beautiful workmanship. And at the other end a beautiful Saracione Reel to complete the look and balance (pictures soon). Another was our wonderful trip to Montana, what a beautiful state. Now if only the winter would pass quicker already the cabin fever is setting in. At the fly bench with a new bug for the season coming (pictures soon). In the meantime I leave you with this picture!

SQUIRREL

Cheers & good health

Back from Montana

Back from Montana! Let me first start with I should have never left! Now that we have established the mood I am in let’s just say we had a great time. Personally, I had the best time at the Nelson’s  Ranch http://www.nelsonsspringcreek.com. The Nelson family Mary, Roger, Jacquie, Tucker and the delightful Morgan are the finest people that you can meet. So if you are ever  want to do some great fishing and and be treated well please book some time at the Nelson Spring Creek Ranch. And before I forget a special thanks to Des the labradorfor making my stay even more ducky (pun intended). DES the Lab

Swan Armstrong Creek

Three of the five Fat Bastards along with Howard & Wye brought with us some fine weather and managed to also get to the Yellowstone Park to open for our fishing needs. No thanks to Obama’s foolishness.

IMGP0054 - Version 2Along with the Nelon’s Spring creek we  fished the Armstrong & the DuPuy spring creeks. We also fished the Firehole River & the Beaver Medaows in the Yellowstone.

Montana

Well long time without a word or at least a written word. Pretty good for an opiniated person like myself. Anyway preparing for one of the “bucket list” events, that being fishing the Montana rivers, in particular those in and around the Bozeman, Yellowstone and such. Booked for Nelson Creek Ranch, Dupuy and Armstrong Creek amongst others. So a few of the Fat Bastards (myself, Bruce & Robert) are going with two fellow fly anglers, Wye & Howard. At the moment, going through my check off list and making sure I bring the essentials.

The internal struggle of which rods to bring, second guessing yourself as to which and how many fly boxes and by the way I am perplexed as to why I tie so many flies, it must be some sort of psychological disorder, seems the you always have this nagging feeling that you somehow forgot to tie a certain fly. Crikey that feeling is annoying. Speaking of which,  the fly tying part, I have been tying some local favourites, mostly Blue ribbon Flies Shop flies check out their site; http://www.blue-ribbon-flies.com nice site & newsletter.

Here are some of the flies I am tying: More to come, I fear.

So enough for now, need a nap!

New Fat Bastard!

I am pleased to announce that a new Fat Bastard has been accepted in the fold. Fat Bastard 5 (apparently his name is Richard) due to his recent purchase of a pontoon he has been granted the pretentious prestigious  honour and will be initiated to the Fat Bastards & Curmudgeon family.

So the flotilla/armada will be one stronger when we pirate & pillage our way through rivers & ponds!
